The War of Plenty

  • The fourth age saw an influx of water. The swampy regions around Greenmarsh expanded in every direction; most pertinently, eastwards into rodent-controlled territories. By 1391, everything west of Murmur Basin was wetland.

  • Greenmarsh occupied the provinces of:

    -West Glades (now Estergraz)

    -Sweetgrass

    -Snakeskin Fen

    -Curio Creek (now Shady Hammock)

    -Polyp (now Polished Polyp)

  • The rodent kingdom grew intolerant of their pacifist king, who originally gained popularity as a reformist following decades of intra-prairie warfare.

  • Several minor battles ensued. Please donate to fund further research!

  • Led by hares, the rodents of the prairie revolted against their ineffectual king. The rodents quickly re-formed under the banner of the hares, adapting to their nomadic raiding style of life and warfare.

  • This battle was the climax of the Great War and, by far, the bloodiest battle in Groundling history. Although the rodents had larger armies (in both numbers and stature), the armies of Greenmarsh had superior organization and cohesion. The hasty hares had their hinds handed to them by the Swamplings. The clusters of raiding rodents retreated, ruptured, and eventually relented.

  • After Greenmarsh’s victory, the prairie kingdom collapsed and reassembled into their ancestral clans. Greenmarsh formally occupied all territory west of Murmur Basin. The Swamp King claimed all of Murmur River south of the forests in addition to roughly one mile of prairie land east of the river. This land was never occupied and is, for all intents and purposes, still controlled by rodents.

The Dry Wars

  • The entire continent of Mezal Taroc is experiencing a dry age; one of the driest in recorded history.

  • Lower water levels in the eastern region of Greenmarsh have allowed heron populations to explode near Murmur Basin. Heron encounters leave dozens of Swamplings dead each season.

  • Swamplings and Prairielanders alike felt the keratinous clutches of the birds tighten, leaving only one option for the estranged Groundlings.
